This dissertation primarily focuses on Wai-lim Yip’s poetic aesthetics,which is search for the common literary rules and aesthetic junction on the basis of fusion of Chinese and Western aesthetic thoughts.As a systematic aesthetics theory,Wai-lim Yip’s poetic aesthetics has a distinctive feature of poetic thinking and poetic wisdom,including poetry,literary criticism,poetry translation,modern painting and other creative concepts and appreciation methods.Wai-lim Yip’s poetic aesthetics concentrates on the rethinking of the research paradigm and method of Chinese aesthetics,which will bring about a poetic thinking mode.The poetic thinking mode,with the aesthetic realm and aesthetic interpretation of Taoist tradition,can transcend the limitations of Chinese and Western aesthetic traditions and create conditions for entering the modern world aesthetic theory space.The study of Wai-lim Yip’s poetic aesthetics should be regarded as a kind of inheritance and development of the internal spirit and thinking mode of Chinese traditional aesthetics.The goal of this dissertation is the analysis and summary of theoretical framework and development track in Wai-lim Yip’s poetic aesthetics.Based on fully understanding of the internal logic of Wai-lim Yip’s poetic aesthetics,this dissertation will explore the modern transformation and development of Chinese traditional aesthetics.This dissertation will be structured in four chapters,in addition to an introduction,and a conclusion.The introduction section studies the research results from domestic and foreign experts and scholars on Wai-lim Yip’s aesthetic thought and summarizes the unique charm that comes from the common aesthetic junction of Chinese and Western cultures in his poetics.Furthermore,this research aims that the comparison between different languages,different aesthetic approach,different thinking style will explore the pragmatics and aesthetics of Chinese classical poetics.The introduction analyzes the poetic aesthetic of Wai-lim Yip is to creating a theoretical grammar and thinking mode that compatible with Chinese and Western perspectives,and to putting forward a policy of breaking the limitation of single cultural theory,which is to achieve the true equality of dialogue and communication between Chinese and Western literary theory.Chapter I.The theoretical sources of Wai-lim Yip’s poetic aesthetics thought.This part mainly analyses three opinions:firstly,tracing Wai-lim Yip’s poetic aesthetics thought and the comprehension of Chinese classical aesthetic spirit;secondly,discussing the successive relationship of Modernism in the May Fourth Period;thirdly,elaborating the influence of Western modern aesthetics on Wai-lim Yip’s poetic aesthetics.Traditional Chinese aesthetics originates from a broad and profound understanding of literature and art,but Yip William’s poetic aesthetics is not a simple inheritance of this ideological trait and discourse mode of traditional aesthetics,but a virtual innovation from Chinese and Western literature,philosophy,aesthetics and many other academic fields.As an open idea,a meaningful space and a new horizon,the dynamic generation and fluctuant rend showing in Wai-lim Yip’s poetic aesthetics is included the spirit of Chinese classical aesthetics,the thought of literary revolution in the May Fourth Period,Western Symbolism,New Criticism,and Heidegger’s Aesthetics.All the various thoughts can be viewed as indispensable constituents of the complexity of Wai-lim Yip’s poetic aesthetics.The shaping process of Wai-lim Yip’s poetic aesthetics has the features of "creative transformation" which meets development rules of modern Chinese aesthetics.The stylistic style and discourse form in Wai-lim Yip’s poetic aesthetics essentially open up a new perspective of aesthetic thought research.Chapter Ⅱ.The characteristics and essences of Wai-lim Yip’s poetic aesthetics thought.Based on ’poetic wisdom’ and ’poetic thinking’,Chinese traditional aesthetics is a poetical and cultural form that shaped the deep structure and unique appearance of Chinese culture permanently in ancient Chinese world.Wai-lim Yip’s poetic aesthetics thought,which is surrounded by the inherent spirt and value orientation of poetic’,has been developing a research on Chinese poetic culture with the features of Chinese classical aesthetics and Western modernist poetics.The characteristics of Wai-lim Yip’s poetic aesthetics includes:rational and poetic explanation;thinking method by systems analysis and empirical science;implicit language features and literary style with romantic rhetoric.Chapter Ⅲ.The multidimensional presentation of Wai-lim Yip’s poetic aesthetics.Wai-lim Yip’s poetic aesthetics is reflected not only in the theoretical level,but also in poetry creation,poetry translation,poetics criticism,novel aesthetics thinking and discussion,which brings a new implication for aesthetics construction.On poetry creation:Fusing language strategies and presentation mode of Chinese and Western poetry,Wai-lim Yip’s modern poetry with Chinese classical aesthetics and Western symbolism provides a new perspective for creating poetic theory that matching the Chinese and Western aesthetic rules.On poetic criticism:Wai-lim Yip can pay attention to the understanding of the aesthetic fusion of China and the West in his poetic criticism,not increase the Modernity to the traditional critical terms,but transplant the concepts of Western poetics into the traditional context of Chinese literary theory.Wai-lim Yip enlarges the scope and boundary of traditional aesthetic concept and achieves the internal communication between Chinese traditional art spirit and Western literary theory,which incentives Chinese aesthetics to the forefront of Chinese and Western comparative literature.On novel criticism:Wai-lim Yip tries to explore the similarities between poetry and aesthetics in the perspective of poetic art,in order to establish a new angle for the realm and performance skills of novels.The fusion methods he applies would be create the poetic features in novel criticism.On poetry translation:In his translation mode,he tries to maintain the presentation and restoration of classical images and avoids the analysis and instructions for poetry.The translation methods,such as reduce declarative discourse,could keep the images as lively as the original poem.The reader who participant Wai-lim Yip’s translation could get rid of the shackles of language and acquire the aesthetic capability for classical poetry.Chapter Ⅳ.The comparative study of poetic aesthetics between Wai-lim Yip and overseas scholars.This part mainly focuses on the relative comparison among Chia-ying Yeh、Stephen Owen、James Liu and Wai-lim Yip on poetic aesthetics.Firstly.The scope and rules for comparison should be discussed,and then the comparative study will carry out among the several overseas scholars on their different aesthetic characteristics.It will reveal the similarities and differences in theoretical selection、poetic criticism、translation strategies、artic teaching among these scholars and analyze the efforts they made to the aesthetic construction in the whole world.Under the discussion about significance of poetics comparison in cross-cultural perspective,the research will put forward some thoughts on the construction of Chinese poetic aesthetics:rethinking the modern transformation of Chinese classical aesthetics spirit;broaden the dialogue between Chinese and Western culture;establish a poetic aesthetic culture.The Conclusion.Having been witnessed the great influence and impact of Western aesthetics,Chinese literary theorists thought about how to inherit the unique expression from traditional Chinese aesthetics and establish a new contemporary Chinese aesthetics beyond the limitations of traditional Chinese and Western aesthetics.The value of Wai-lim Yip’s poetic aesthetics theory lies in how to enlighten the effective parts of Chinese traditional aesthetic resources and join the worldwide aesthetic theory construction.
