Hakka is a branch of the Han in southern China. They have an immigrant culture that maintains their relative independence in the process of adapting to their place of residence.Overseas Hakka society is an important part of the overseas Chinese society. And Indonesia is also the overseas country with the largest number of Chinese and Hakkas.Hakkas have a long history of moving to Indonesia, their influence on their place of residence cannot be ignored. But after World War II,they gradually changed from a Hakka with Chinese nationality to an Indonesian passively or actively. In this process, they tried to integrate into Indonesia’s mainstream society and build new identities through cultural adjustment, social resistance and political participation. After Indonesia’s independence, the Sukarno government and the Suharto government adopted an unfriendly policy toward the Chinese. The Hakkas forced to stay in Indonesia are more inclined to maintain cohesiveness and relative independence as Chinese sub-ethnics by inheriting Chinese culture and Hakka culture.Hakkas who choose to stay in Indonesia are more inclined to seek new development opportunities by integrating into the mainstream Indonesian society. The Suharto government has imposed a strict compulsory assimilation policy on the Chinese Indonesian. Therefore, most Indonesian Chinese have accepted assimilation. However, some Indonesian Hakkas have shown a strong spirit of resistance in the authoritarian political environment. And they have preserved the fire of Chinese culture rejuvenation for the Indonesian Chinese society and the mobilization force for the rights of ethnic groups. After the democratization reform,in the gradually improving political environment, the Indonesian Hakkas accelerated the revival of the entire Indonesian Chinese society by actively developing Hakka communities, promoting Chinese education, leading Chinese media, and promoting Chinese culture. In the long-term historical changes, the Indonesian Hakka society has always adhered to its own ethnic culture. This is a prominent feature of Indonesian Hakkas that distinguish them from other Chinese sub-ethnic groups, and an important way for them to deal with the mainstream society in Indonesia. The Hakka people in Indonesia understand that only by adhering to the ethnic culture and giving the identity of"Indonesian citizens" cultural diversity and political inclusiveness,Indonesian Chinese society can ensure its own security and obtain long-term development space.
