| With the transformation of the Chinese economy from a high-speed growth to a high-quality development stage, and the implementation of innovation-driven development strategies, the relationship between research and development(R&D)and total factor productivity(TFP)growth has received increasing attention from academia, government, and industry. Many current researches demonstrate that the rapid increase in R&D input did not bring about synchronized growth of TFP.However, there is little systematic in-depth research on the causes of this paradox. This dissertation takes this phenomenon as an entry point to examine the existence of this paradox in manufacturing industry.Reveal the mechanism of R&D input affecting TFP growth thoroughly, and then comprehensively analyze the crux of the paradox phenomenon. This research has important theoretical significance to enrich and develop industrial economic theory and innovative economic theory. It has important practical significance to clarify the direction of manufacturing development,to find out the breakthrough point and key point of reform, and to promote the transformation and upgrading of China’s manufacturing. The full text consists of seven chapters. The first chapter is the introduction. The key problems to be solved are presented based on the research background and current research situation. The second chapter establishes the logical framework for analyzing R&D’s effects on TFP growth based on the R&D endogenous growth theory, absorption ability theory, and knowledge spillover theory. It constructs a logical framework to analyze the mechanism of R&D input affecting TFP growth of China’s manufacturing industry, and forms a theoretical foundation for the dissertation. The third chapter calculates the growth rate of TFP in China’s manufacturing industry and the effects that R&D input makes on it,checks the existence of the "R&D paradox" in the manufacturing industry, and forms a realistic foundation for the dissertation. From the perspective of intra-industry technology innovation, technology transfer between enterprises within an industry and technology association between industries, chapter four to six uncover the mechanisms of R&D affecting TFP growth, including the transformation mechanism, the learning mechanism, and the spillover mechanism. Then analyze the reasons for the manufacturing industry R&D paradox under three mechanisms through multi-angle empirical tests.Chapter seven is the summary of the full text.Summarize the main research conclusions and put forward relevant policy suggestions. The main contributions of this dissertation include: Firstly, construct a logical framework to study the mechanisms that R&D input affects manufacturing industry TFP growth. At present, many scholars find that "R&D paradox" exists in China. However, these studies generally take this phenomenon as the research background or analyze it from a single perspective. There are few systematic studies on this problem, especially lack comprehensive analysis of the manufacturing industry. In order to make a comprehensive and systematic analysis on the mechanism and effect of R&D input affecting manufacturing industry TFP growth, this dissertation follows the train of thought of "realistic basis-theoretical basis-mechanism analysis-empirical test" to construct a logical framework to study the internal mechanisms that R&D input affects manufacturing industry TFP growth from the perspective of intra-industry technology innovation, technology transfer between enterprises within an industry and technology correlation between industries. And then make an empirical test on the mechanism of R&D input affecting TFP growth from the dimension of the whole manufacturing industry and the subdivision industry.Secondly,to analyze the complex correlation between R&D input and TFP growth, the internal mechanisms of R&D input affecting TFP growth in manufacturing industry are summarized as the transformation mechanism of intra-industry technology innovation, the learning mechanism of technology transfer between enterprises within an industry, and the spillover mechanism of inter-industry technology correlation.Within an industry,R&D input of an industry can promote TFP through innovation effect produced by transformation mechanism which works through technology development to product development and then to new product value realization. At the same time,it can promote TFP through absorption effect produced by learning mechanism which works by digesting and utilizing the advanced transfer technology between enterprises within an industry. For the outside of an industry,R&D input of other industries can also promote TFP growth by the form of technology spillover. The three mechanisms are interrelated. They describe the paths that R&D input affecting TFP growth from different perspectives, and constitute a mechanism system.Thirdly, verify the existence of the "R&D paradox" phenomenon in China’s manufacturing industry and clarify reasons why high growth in R&D input did not lead to significant growth in TFP in manufacturing industry.Under the transformation mechanism, lower intensity of R&D input, the disjointed transformation of technological achievements into products and values, and unreasonable human capital structure hinder the growth of TFP.Under the learning mechanism, the lower level of domestic technology and the weaker absorption ability of foreign technology limit the promotion effect of technology transfer on the growth of industrial TFP,which is not enough to offset the negative impact of innovation effect. It shows that China’s manufacturing industry has not truly realized the transformation from imitation innovation to independent innovation.Under the spillover mechanism,R&D spillover effects have not formed a virtuous cycle, and the restriction of organizational inertia makes the spillover effect non-linear.To some extent, these problems prevent the inter-industry R&D spillover from working. |
