At present, the transformation and upgrading of enterprises is the only way to adapt to the national innovation-driven development strategy.Where enterprises should transform and how to transform have become the focus of the industry. From the perspective of business model, designing a reasonable business model is the key to the success of enterprise transformation.Business model has become an important source for enterprises to obtain sustainable competitive advantage in the new era. However, there are still many problems in the design of business model.First, entrepreneurs'understanding of business model is still not clear enough.Second,in reality, some enterprises adopting the same business model succeed and some fail. Therefore,it is of great practical significance to deeply understand how to design the business model of an enterprise and its impact on firm performance. In recent years, more and more scholars in different fields pay attention to the research of business model, such as strategic management,e-commerce,technology and innovation management. However, there are still inconsistent conclusions on the relationship between business model and firm performance. Therefore, some scholars pointed out that it is necessary to further explore the boundary conditions, intermediate mechanism and antecedents of business model influencing firm performance. However,so far, especially in the context of China, there is a lack of comprehensive and systematic research on the relationship between business model and firm performance. Therefore,it is of great theoretical significance to explore the impact of business model on firm performance. This paper studies the boundary conditions, intermediate mechanism and antecedents of business model influencing firm performance.Study 1 explores the capability boundary conditions of business model influencing firm performance based on resource allocation theory.Study 2 explores the mediating role of supply chain integration between business model and operational performance based on dynamic capability theory.Study 3 explores the influence of institutional factors on business model and the moderating effect of entrepreneurial passion based on institutional theory.Through the analysis of the two-stage questionnaire data combined with the objective operating data of enterprises, the three sub studies draw the following conclusions respectively. The results of Study 1 show that enterprise capabilities, including marketing capabilities and technological capabilities, play different moderating roles between business model and firm performance.Specifically, the matching of technological capability and efficiency-centered business model can help enterprises achieve a higher level of performance. On the contrary, the matching of marketing capability and novelty-centered business model can help enterprises achieve a higher level of performance. The results of Study 2 show that supply chain integration plays a different mediating role between business model and firm performance.External integration completely mediates the impact of novelty-centered business model on operational performance, while efficiency-centered business model can directly improve operational performance. The results of Study 3 show that different institutional factors have different effects on business model.Specifically, legal protection positively affects efficiency-centered business model and novelty-centered business model, while government support only positively affects efficiency-centered business model, and the importance of guanxi only positively affects novelty-centered business model. Moreover, entrepreneurial passion enhances the role of importance of guanxi in promoting efficiency-centered and novelty-centered business models,as well as the role of legal protection in promoting novelty-centered business model. However, entrepreneurial passion weakens the role of government support on efficiency-centered and novelty-centered business models. This study has three main theoretical contributions.First,Study 1 explored the moderating role of enterprise capability in the relationship between business model and firm performance, which promoting the research on the boundary conditions of business model.Second,Study 2 links business model with operational performance by exploring the mediating role of supply chain integration, which responding to scholars' call to study the intermediate mechanism of business model affecting performance. Finally,Study 3 enriches the research on the antecedents of business model from the perspective of institutional theory by exploring the influence of three dominant institutional factors on business model and the role of entrepreneurs. The practical contribution of this study mainly includes:first, this study provides a basis for manufacturing entrepreneurs to understand the different direct impact of efficiency-centered business model and novelty-centered business model on firm performance.Second, the conclusions of Study 1 provide guidelines for marketing managers and R&D managers of manufacturing enterprises on how to establish marketing and technical capabilities to support business model.Third, the conclusions of Study 2 provide the direction of how to ensure the implementation of business model for the operation managers of manufacturing enterprises. Finally, the conclusions of Study 3 provide a basis for manufacturing enterprise managers to leverage different institutional resources to ensure their business model designs.
