The legend of "cowhide enclosure" is to say,A came to B's territory and wanted a piece of land.An offered to borrow(buy and rent)a piece of land the size of cowhide. After B promised,A cut the cowhide into thin strips and connected it into a large territory.B had no choice but to accept it.This is the basic content of the Legend of the Cowhide Circle. The legend of "cowhide enclosure" originated in Europe and spread widely in the Chinese and Western world, and it has been spread in China for hundreds of years. The spread of the legend of "cowhide enclosure" is not a simple literary phenomenon, but a sociological phenomenon with profound meaning.Only by dissecting the legend of "cowhide enclosure" as a sociological phenomenon can we find its hidden social and cultural significance in the process of origin, evolution, spread and so on.This paper is divided into six parts, the first part is the introduction, which explains the basis of the topic and the significance of the research on the legend of "cowhide enclosure",and makes a review and review of the related research. On this basis, the theoretical perspective and research methods used in this paper are put forward, and on this basis, the research ideas and main contents of this paper are conceived. The second part systematically demonstrates how a legend becomes the research object of sociology, and expounds the inherent logic and meaning of legends as a social fact.through this part,it illustrates that legends,as a special research object of sociology, can expand the research boundary of sociological tradition and the possibility of using sociological methods to intervene in the study of legends. The third part systematically combs the clue of how the legend of "cowhide enclosure" originated from Europe, evolved in history and distributed in time and space, and shows how the legend of "cowhide enclosure",as a cultural phenomenon,is combined with historical changes.and has been given different cultural connotations in different historical periods, especially the regional characteristics of the "cowhide land" legends, through the analysis of its regional characteristics. It is found that the legend of "cowhide enclosure" has gradually evolved from an "immigrant" legend to a cultural symbol with the marks of colonial aggression and religious invasion.Based on this,in this paper, the author analyzes the legend from three dimensions:historical evolution, discourse and narrative by borrowing the ideas of knowledge sociology of Michel Foucault and Jean-Francois Lyotard. In the fourth part, through the analysis of the historical dimension of the legend of "cowhide enclosure",it is found that after the 15 th century, with the opening of new routes, the legend of "cowhide enclosure" has gradually increased in some areas.enclosure activities have been covered with the nature of territorial aggression. At the end of the 19 th century, the spread of the legend of "cowhide enclosure" reflected the historical truth that the western powers trampled on China's sovereignty and occupied territory in various ways in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, which showed that the evolution of the legendary text was closely related to the historical process of the times. In the fifth part, the legend of "cowhide land" is placed in the local society, and the spread and evolution of the legend of "cowhide land" of missionaries in the southwest is found. The logic behind it is to break the boundary of belief established by the original religion through rituals and local authorities. If Christianity wants to establish the status of religious legitimacy,it must use its discourse power to act on people's emotions and guide them through the II images rendered in their eyes and consciousness by various legends. The legend of "cowhide enclosure" spread in southwest China was created in this way,and the essence of Christianity's use of its control over discourse is to strive for the religious legitimacy of the region. In the sixth part, through the narrative analysis of the Cowhide Circle,it is found that the public's cognitive image of missionaries is superimposed in the process of social and historical changes and the long-term interaction with the people in daily life. The construction of this image reflects not only historical grand factors, but also individual micro feelings.Rather than saying that the missionary's understanding and imagination of "cowhide land" reflects or reproduces the "truth" of modern Chinese history and the identity of the modern Chinese nation,it is rather a set of victim discourse "power".It is a way of imagination and "image construction" of "reality" and reality, which is spread by word of mouth. Finally,it "created" the despicable behavior of Christian missionaries and the "truth" of Christian crazy "invasion",and then reflected the sadness that modern China was humiliated and invaded by imperialist powers. In a word, this paper uses the research paradigm of sociology of knowledge to explore the evolution and regional generation of the legend of "cowhide enclosure" and reveal its social and cultural background and social change process.Especially since modern times, the evolution of the legend of the "cowhide land" of missionaries in southwest China presents a specific regional landscape, reflecting the time and space structure of the society at that time and the relationship between the local government, the people and the missionaries. It also reflects the game between Christianity and the local original religion to obtain the social history information of legitimacy. In a deep sense, the legend of "cowhide enclosure" is not only the product of the concept of anti-foreign exclusion in modern China, but also the reflection of the legitimate needs of religious dissemination, but also the epitome of modern China's ups and downs.
