In any literary research or criticism,it is far from the truth to arrive at a definite evaluation of literary works, and reading those works may empower readers constantly to reap the significance of their own taste for literature. The chief aim of literary research, therefore,is probably less the matter of pinning down the meaning of literature works, than the one of delving further into all interpretative perspectives to which literary texts are open, factors and mechanisms that shape textual meaning generation. That is why it is of great academic significance and application value to explore the mechanism of interpreting classic literal works.Bulgakov’s works,world-famous Russian classic, once took the world’s literary circles by storm and has drawn researchers’ attention into our own days,to weeding through the old findings to bring the forth. These findings cover a wide range of fields of humanities, including sociology, ethics, mythology, theology, narratology, linguistics, structurology, psychology, and semiotics.Research into mechanism of textual meaning generation in his works is considered to be reasonable and meaningful. However,by sorting out the research results of Bulgakov at home and abroad,it can be found that the academic research on the mechanism of textual meaning generation in Bulgakov’s creation is deficient either in quantity or extent. Therefore, that is the reason why this dissertation is aimed to conduct further research into exploring mechanism of textual meaning generation in Bulgakov’s texts of Matryoshka on the basis of previous researching findings.Based primarily on Soviet semioticsist Lotman’s theory of textual meaning generation mechanism, this dissertation,in its detailed analysis coupled with other well-known scholars’ great bulk of theoretical points,is planned to offer more comprehensive and powerful methodologies on which it rests,to deep interpret and analyze texts of Matryoshka in Bulgakov’s works,to explore the textual meaning generation mechanism characteristic of Bulgakov and to provide a new methodological mode for future studies of other classic literary works. This dissertation consists of the following parts, namely introduction, body and conclusion. In the introduction, rationale for this study is put forward, along with the brief introduction to the dominant research targets, ideas, methods, innovations and research value. Its body part falls further into five chapters.Chapter 1 dwells mainly on an overview of studies on Bulgakov’s in China and other countries.Chapter 2 proceeds with the introduction to the fundamental methodology,i.e.Lotman’s theory of textual meaning generation mechanism. Its introduction to definition, evolution and characteristics of Lotman’s theory is made in the first section,in the second section,Lotman’s construction principles of artistic texts are illustrated.Lotman holds the view that the construction of artistic text concerns two basic principles, namely the principle of integrating the same aesthetics with the opposite and the one of parallel comparison. In the third section,it proceeds with Lotman’s encoding and decoding of artistic texts. In Lotman’s opinion, due to the difference between the author’s encoding and readers’ decoding of texts, the generation of any text has to undergo reconstruction and deformation, leading to people’s different interpretation of the works, which therefore contributes to such classic works and to the consequence of “there are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand readers’ eyes”.Chapters 3,4and 5 constitute the body part of this dissertation.Chapter 3,composed of three sections, based on Lotman’s theory, engages in analyzing representative texts in Bulgakov’s works and specifically in exploring the texts of Matryoshka, studying how these texts transform, collide and interact with each other in Bulgakov’s works from the perspective of symbols and the boundary of text.Chapter 4 particularly deals with the research into the construction principles of Bulgakov’s texts of Matryoshka from the perspective of repetition and mixing. This chapter is subdivided into three sections and specifically explores the way Lotman’s theories of text construction have been employed in such works as Master and Margaret,Fiery Island,Great Happiness,Ivan Vasilyevich,Crazy Jourdain and Don Quixote.Chapter 5,from the perspectives of encoding and decoding, illustrates that Bulgakov distills his ideas of reconstruction and deformation into his masterpieces. This chapter is composed of three sections and takes Adam and Eve,Ominous Egg and Master and Margaret as examples to analyze how the subtexts, interextual texts and reader’s identities are reconstructed and deformed in these works. The final part, the conclusion one, deepens and summarizes the characteristics of the mechanism of textual meaning generation of texts of Matryoshka in Bulgakov’s works. He makes the author, the text, the reader and the culture interchangeable, nested, colliding, interactional and mutually influencing. That’s how the interpretation of textual meaning is continuously expanded and extended in this process, and attitudes towards the classic is ultimately manifested.
