Nanyin(literally Southern Music)is the music in the heart of people whose homeplace is Quanzhou in Southern Fujian Province,no matter where they are.Since1990 when Nanyin was listed on the teaching program by schools in Quanzhou,brilliant cooperation has been conducted between the school education and social education,bringing fruitful achievements.However,still more should be done.To gain further advancement,Nanyin education should now consider the ways of constructing a sound Nanyin education system that can help realize the values expected by the current society and contribute to the shift of heritage preservation from passive protection to active sustainable inheritance.This article presents how Nanyin education achieves the aim of “mindful protection,timely rescue,rational utilization and sustainable inheritance” by interweaving the timeliness(up-to-date school education),practicality(the practical social education)and spirituality(the cultural pursuit of educating and cultivating the public).The article consists of five chapters and one concluding chapter.Chapter one reviews the traditional methods of teaching Nanyin.By setting them against the background of globalization,it argues that Nanyin education is not only a powerful tool to promote the recognition of Chinese national values and culture,but also a medium of cultural reflection and innovation on the way to building a strong cultural awareness.Chapter two affirmes Quanzhou's unique contribution in talent-cultivation.Through the multi-dimensional and multi-level exploration of the cooperation between school education and social education of Nanyin,it makes it clear that the interconnection with social culture is absolutely necessary for the inheritance of local culture(Nanyin),the cultivation of Nanyin application-oriented and elite talents,and the cultivation of Nanyin amateurs and performers.Chapter three explores the four key advantage of school education of Nanyin,that is,the guiding theoretical research,the inherently viable teaching,the instructive and illustrative educators,and the guarantee for the sustainable development.It argues that these four advantages well prepare the school education for the historic mission of cultivating talents for the preservation and inheritance of intangible heritage.Chapter four talks about the three significances of Nanyin education for social development,namely,the universal and special significance of art practice for the cultural of Mingnan(Southern Fujian),the significance of education in constructing individual identity and achieving social practicality for the purpose of cultural preservation and appreciation,and the construction of social discourse with multiple identification.It aims to deepen the understanding about the nature,characteristics and functions of Nanyin education,and it reveals that Nanyin education is vital in guaranteeing the shift of heritage preservation from passive protection to active sustainable inheritance and development.Chapter five discusses the civilizing effect of Nanyin education on the metaphysical level.It argues that Nanyin education,with its dedication to the aims of "making people elegant","making people polite","making people moral",by “exposing people to music”,helps cultivate the integrity of personality by uplifting the mind and spirit,building morality,enhancing the sense of humanity and strengthening the cultural confidence.The conclusive part of the thesis introduces the problem of alienation and the current development of Nanyin's inheritance.It stresses the unity of opposites between protecting Nanyin's traditional characteristic and exploring the development potential for sustainable inheritance and on the basis,affirms the value of Nanyin education lies in the fact that it makes possible the shift from passive protection to active sustainable development.The study of the paper on the significance of Nanyin education in Quanzhou is expected to serve as a useful reference for promoting the education of Chinese traditional musical.
