| Modern Chinese particle words,which are a kind of words with Chinese localization characteristics and regarded as particle words for short in the following,have drawn great attention of language researchers from 1940 s.Many scholars have explored particle words from semantics,syntactic and pragmatic perspectives,and have made many contributions to the research of particle words.However,so far,few scholars have studied particle words as a whole and failed to construct a unified theoretical framework to conduct a systematic and in-depth analysis of the operation mechanism of particle words.This study attempts to explore in this aspect.Under the background of postmodern philosophy and guided by generative holism,the dissertation constructs a Salience/Restriction Model(SRM)based on the characteristics of particle words,which is used to systematically explain the cognitive operation mechanism of particle word,that is how particle words interact with semantic words,and finally generate and interpret the discourse.On this basis,through the analysis and research on the generation mechanism and construal mechanism of different types of particle words in living examples,the rationality and effectiveness of the theoretical framework are tested,and its explanatory power is demonstrated.This dissertation mainly conducts the research from three aspects:Firstly,the dissertation constructs a holistic theoretical framework of the cognitive operation mechanism of particle word--SRM.Under the background of postmodern philosophy,guided by generative holism,and making use of the relevant academic resources of cognitive linguistics,it integrates the generation and construal mechanism of particle words based on the Autonomy-dependence Alignment Model(Langacker 1987: 298-300)and the Holistic Cognitive Pragmatic Model(Liao 2011:99-101).SRM provides an explanatory and operable analytical theoretical framework for the study of cognitive operation mechanism of particle words.The framework can be divided into Salience/Restriction Generation Mechanism and Salience/Restriction Construal Mechanism.The former focuses on the derivation from intentionality to the discourse,and emphasizes particle words as dependent components act on semantic words as independent componentst,which is more conducive to analyzing the generation mechanism of particle words.The latter focuses on the process of deriving the intentionality of the expresser from the discourse,which can better explain the construal mechanism of particle words.Secondly,the dissertation expounds the generation mechanism of particle words by SRM.Because of the dependency of particle words,the generation process of particle words is included in the generation of the discourse,which is closely related to the semantic words.The specific generation process of the discourse containing particle words is dominated by the intentionality which includes intentionality attitude and intentionality content of the discourse expresser,and starts with the meaning of the discourse,that is,the choice of intentionality content.Intentionality attitude determines the expression mode of intentionality content,that is,it is achieved by the interaction of “semantic words”and “particle words”.Under the function of particle words,the semantic words can highlight the specific nature that the discourse expresser wants to highlight or restrict the specific state that the discourse expresser wants to restrict,so as to determine the relationship between the semantic words and particle words,and select the specific particle words according to the relationship.Then,the semantic words turn into the independent component and the particle words,the dependent component.The particle words,as the dependent component,depend on the semantic words,as the independent component,which are determined by the semantic words.After the integration process,the independent component and the dependent component at the sentence level finally turn into discourse.Thus,the particle words are generated.In order to prove the feasibility and effectiveness of the analysis framework of Salience/Restriction Generation Mechanism,the process of structural particle words,temporal particle words and modal particle words acting on semantic words and the discourse generation are explained respectively,and the feasibility of the analysis framework of generation mechanism is demonstrated by analyzing the examples of structural particle words,temporal particle words and modal particle words.Thirdly,the dissertation explains the construal mechanism of particle words by SRM.Because of the dependency of particle words,the construal process of particle words is included in the construal of the discourse,which is closely related to the semantic words.The specific construal process of the discourse containing particle words is that the discourse comprehender judges the semantic words which is independent component and particle words,the dependent component of the discourse which is usually incomplete expression through the abductive reasoning.The particle words,as the dependent component,depend on the semantic words,as the independent component,which is determined by the semantic words,and the semantic words will highlight the discourse comprehender's intention under the function of particle words.In this way,the relationship between semantic words and particle words can be determined.Then,by means of the whole complement or interpretation,the incomplete literal expression becomes a relatively complete expression,and further determines the communicative intention of discourse.Thus,the particle words are understood.In order to prove the feasibility and validity of the analysis framework of Salience/Restriction Construal Mechanism,the dissertation explains the process of structural particle words,temporal particle words and modal particle words acting on semantic words and the discourse construal,and proves the feasibility of the analysis framework of construal mechanism by analyzing the examples of structural particle words,temporal particle words and modal particle words.To sum up,by means of literature review,theoretical reflection and the verification by examples,this dissertation constructs a theoretical model SRM integrating the generation and construal mechanism of particle words.Combined with living examples of different types of particle words,SRM is used to verify the generation and construal mechanism of particle words to demonstrate the operability of SRM. |
