Knowledge is the carrier of human civilization,and knowledge constructed in canonical scientific discourse is a crystallized part of civilization.Various disciplines have explored the essence of knowledge from different perspectives,but few studies have been conducted on the essence and methods of knowledge construction in scientific discourse from the perspective of linguistics and knowledge construction.Systemic Functional Linguistics(SFL),Legitimate Code Theory(LCT)and Bernstein’s Sociology of Education(SE)interpret knowledge from complementary perspectives.However,they have not yet been integrated into a systematic theoretical model.This dissertation attempts to build an integrated model for analyzing knowledge construction in scientific discourse from the combined perspective of SFL,LCT,and SE.It explores the relationship between social semiotic resources and the essence and basic model of knowledge construction in scientific discourse.The SFL-LCT integrated model established in this study has the following two characteristics: first,it is a comprehensive model.The discourse analysis of knowledge construction is carried out through stratification,instantiation,metafunctions,individuation and semogenesis;second,it is a model that integrates SFL,LCT and SE.LCT is a new development of Bernstein’s SE,which can supplement the deficiency of SFL in knowledge construction.SFL is a powerful theory in discourse analysis,while LCT is a powerful tool in analyzing knowledge construction.This study attempts to answer the following research questions: first,how to apply SFL,SE,and LCT in revealing the essence and mode of knowledge construction in scientific discourse more systematically and profoundly? How to integrate the models of SFL and LCT into a comprehensive model? What are its original theoretical resources? Second,what is the relationship between the features of knowledge construction and those of discourse constructed through semiotic resources? How to reveal this type of relationship by establishing a theoretical model and an analytical framework? How to apply this integrated theoretical model in analyzing the knowledge construction of scientific discourse? How to test its effectiveness? Thirdly,what conclusions can be drawn by analyzing Newton’s Opticks? Can these conclusions verify the validity of the model? What are the implications of these analyses for exploring the essence and basic mode of knowledge construction in scientific discourse?In order to answer the above research questions,this study mainly uses qualitative analysis and empirical research methods to explore knowledge construction in Opticks.The main research results obtained are as follows: 1)SFL,SE,and LCT can first be constructed into a general theoretical model centered on knowledge construction in scientific discourse,and then derive a practical analytical framework from the theoretical model to reflect both the characteristics of discourse and those of knowledge construction.The model constructed in this dissertation combines SFL theories on one hand and integrates SFL model with LCT model on the other.These theories include the analysis of semantic density and semantic gravity in LCT,Martin’s genre theory and individuation theory,coherence theory established by Hu Zhuanglin,Zhang Delu and Zhu Yongsheng,and Halliday’s theory on discourse features.2)Based on this general integrated theoretical model,the dissertation distills the discourse analysis methods from SFL and the analysis methods about knowledge construction from LCT,and combines them to form an analytical framework.3)Through the analysis of Newton’s Opticks,the feasibility and effectiveness of the analytical framework of the model are verified.Case studies show that the analytical framework is conducive to exploring and revealing the essence and basic mode of knowledge construction more systematically and conveniently,to revealing the vertical or horizontal nature of discourse and the semantic relevance of discourse,and to revealing the relationship between the features of knowledge construction and those of discourse,to revealing the specific ways and purpose of knowledge construction.In a word,this study constructs a preliminary integrated theoretical model and analytical framework to analyze knowledge construction in scientific discourse.It absorbs and applies the internal theoretical branches of SFL,Bernstein’s knowledge construction theory,and the semantics of LCT.The theoretical framework proposed in this dissertation can be regarded as the development of relevant theories.At the same time,this theoretical model enables us to systematically and comprehensively analyze the essence and mode of knowledge construction in scientific discourse such as Opticks.
