This article takes the reconstruction of murals of two temples,Longquan Temple and Puguang Temple of Taiyuan,Shanxi Province,as an opportunity and makes an in-depth investigation on the subjects,contents,styles,techniques,and ways of space display of the murals.On this basis,a new reconstruction scheme is proposed for the murals of these two temples,and is regarded as a guiding principle for practice.Based on the creation practice of murals of two temples,this study has conducted a discussion on the preliminary investigation of the mural creation,creation concepts and process.It can be mainly divided into four parts.In Chapter I,the historical evolution of two temples was examined.The prosperity of these two temples in Tang Dynasty was studied to further demonstrate the rationality of Tang Dynasty mural style.In Chapter II,to have a clearer understanding on the mural styles of Tang Dynasty,an overall investigation and exploration was carried out on the features of the Tang mural from the perspectives of Tang Dynasty Literature and existing images.In Chapter III,the concept of Ancient Style-oriented New Look was proposed on the basis of preliminary investigation and exploration,and a clearer positioning was made on the overall style,content and themes of the murals in the two temples.In Chapter IV,a detailed exploration was carried out on the design and creation process of three representative murals,Wenshu Attended the Meeting,Wutaishan of Longquan Temple,and Avatamsaka Sutra of Puguang Temple,and the experience as well as pros and cons in creating the murals of the two temples are summarized in the end.From what has been mentioned above,the author has learned the following experience on the contemporary activation and creation of traditional mural.Firstly,modern public art concept is introduced into the reconstruction of temple mural and it,to some extent,regards traditional temples as modern museums of religion and art.Secondly,the recovering of ancient mural should base on certain historical contexts and respect its historical features.A temple should be decorated with a unique style of mural to avoid any similarity in contents and forms,as well as repeated patterns.Innovation should be made in the context of inheritance.Thirdly,attention should be also given to the interest of painting arts.The arts,interests and sensible images should be highlighted and intensified on the basis where the conveying of religious information conforms to the sadhana drubtab,and the teaching function of artistic aesthetics is of vital importance in this area.
