This paper is arranged in a logical order that starts from the art form and ends with its significance. The study takes "space",one of art forms of Qi Baishi's painting works,as the research object and employs visual art semiology and other analysis methods to explore the "implications" of these art symbols. The concept of "space" in this paper has multiple dimensions prevailing in Qi Baishi's works, including visual space in landscape paintings, ideological space in scenery poems, the vision-field space brought by calligraphy inscriptions onto the paintings, the "red space" in seal cutting works and sociological space of Qi's self-image and self-identification.The first dimension refers to the sensation of the artist, which is a comprehensive physical sense well beyond the visual sense. In the second dimension, due to the fact that physical senses of the artist are closely connected to his era,the "implications" of the connections then become another important point to be explored in this paper. The author will analyze the self-image and identity construction embodied in Qi's works from the perspective of semiology, point out influences imposed by the artist's identification on his artistic style, which will lead to a further interpretation of Qi Baishi in a large times context and exploration of the significance of his painting and calligraphy works for the era.
