Form Of Beauty:Study On The Drapery And Folds In The Plastic Arts Of Renaissance Florence

During the Renaissance,Florence was not only the capital of art at that time,but also the center of textile and clothing industries.The unique artistic,cultural and social economic environment determines the importance of clothing in the plastic arts of Florence,and the drapery and folds,which is the intersection of fashion culture and plastic arts,indicate the achievements made by Florentines in the textiles,fashion design and craft,plastic arts and other aspects at that time.Based on the interdisciplinary study on both history of costume and art,this dissertation focuses on the drapery and folds in plastic arts of Renaissance Florence from the perspectives of material and visual environment,style and form analysis,iconology,sociology,psychology etc.,elaborates the origin,development,form,meanings of drapery and folds,and reveals the rich connotations of drapery and folds on all above.The dissertation includes six chapters: the first chapter summarizes the motivation of the research,the domestic and international research status,research methods and other contents,which serve as the basis of the overall analysis.The second chapter focuses on the issue of " The social situation and visual context of drapery and folds",discusses the textiles,sumptuary legislation,textile in daily life and religious context in Florence,and on all above,this dissertation discusses the visual skills and visual sensitivity of the Florentines seeing the textile at that time.Thus elucidates the unique material and visual context of drapery and folds in the plastic arts of Renaissance Florence.The third chapter traces the origin of drapery and folds in Renaissance Florence in terms of artistic style and skills.This chapter focuses on Ancient Greece,Rome and medieval plastic arts,analyses the evolution of drapery and folds in the plastic arts from classical times to the Middle Ages,and then to the early Renaissance,in combination with the classification and analysis of the style and structure clothing in Ancient Greece and Rome.In addition,this chapter also discusses the relationship between different body postures such as standing,sitting and drapery and folds,as well as the social and religious meanings of drapery and folds in classical and medieval times.The fourth chapter,based on the classification of clothing styles,focuses on a large number of pictures of plastic arts,and analyzes in detail the relationship between the clothing styles,wearing manners,fabric materials and drapery and folds in Renaissance Florence.This chapter divides the Renaissance clothing into types of men and women,which are discussed in the basic order of underwear,outerwear,and mantle etc.,and speculates the structure,tailoring and textile material of some of the clothing according to the forms of drapery and folds,to help us understand the details of clothing at that time,so as to reflect the reference value of drapery and folds for the research of costume history.In the fifth chapter,this dissertation discusses the influence of different skills,styles and ideas of the Renaissance Florentine artists on the drapery and folds from the perspective of artistic style.This chapter divided Renaissance into three periods according to the development of style: the 14 th century to the early 15 th century,the middle and late 15 th century,the late 15 th century to the early 16 th century,sums up the main styles in different periods depicting drapery and folds,analyses the artistic techniques of the representative artists in different periods to express drapery and folds,highlights the connection between style,artistic ideas and fashion.The sixth chapter elaborates the multiple implications of drapery and folds.From the perspectives of rebirth of classical culture,the psychological expression according to the theory of empathy,the sociological significance of clothing forms,and the spiritual meaning in the dimension of religion,this chapter explores the meaning of drapery and folds in plastic arts of Renaissance in terms of cultural history,psychology,sociology and religion.
