| There are currently conflicting reports in the epidemiological studies regarding the relationship between potato intake and predictors of obesity including weight gain, body mass index(BMI)and waist circumference(WC).No convincing evidence was obtained from observational studies for supporting an association between potato consumption and obesity.Firstly, the nutritional database for potatoes used as the raw materials for staple food processing was preliminarily established by analyzing 11 recomended nutrients,3 limited nutrients, total phenols, total flavonoids and antioxidant activity of 67 potato cultivars from different locations. As a formal scoring system and the science of classifying foods tool,NRF11.3 index model could be applied for determining the primary constitutes of various potato cultivars and promoting comprehensive nutritional research on potato as a desirable raw material for staple food processing to human nutrition and daily diet.Diets supplementation of potato powders reduced the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio, enriched beneficial bacteria like "S24-7",Bifidobacterium,Parasutterella,Ruminococcus1,Turicibacter,increased the SCFA concentration in distal colon, and stimulated the secretion of satiety-related hormone PYY,which could induce a decreased body weight gain in rats. These results could indicate that potato powder might act as an anti-obesity prebiotics.Additionally, the enrichment of Parasutterella can be regarded as a health index of gut microbiota and the microbial biomarker of body weight gain. |
