With the advances in nanotechnology, micro/nano photonics has become increas-ingly important in science and technology. In last decade, micro/nano photonic struc-tures were used to achieve a number of novel optical effects. In nature, biological systems offer a number of wonderful micro/nano photonic structures by a billion years of evolution. These structures are exploited to achieve their unique biological functions. The meaning of the exploration of natural photonic structures is not only to reveal the interesting strategy to control the color of nature but also to provide inspiration in our design and fabrication of artificial photonic structures. In this thesis, we have reviewed the photonic structures discovered in nature and explain the physical mechanisms of color production. We found many novel amorphous photonic structures with unique optical properties, which may offer a lot of inspiration for our biomimetic studies and applications. Finally, we tried to use the templated infil-tration and phase separation methods to fabricate photonic structures. We also discussed their potential applications. This thesis consists of eight chapters:In the first chapter, we will briefly introduce the major aspects of micro/nano pho-tonics and their research progress. In the second chapter, we will introduce the development of experimental and theoretical methods for the study of natural photonic structures. In the third chapter, we will study full-color reflective scales with random close-packed photonic structure in beetle scales,In the fourth chapter, we will study the "champion" in the coloration produced by amorphous photonic diamond structure in parrot feathersIn the fifth chapter, we will study the broadband reflection of phase separation structure in beetle scales. In the sixth chapter, we will introduce the amorphous photonic structures we found in ancient Chinese porcelains. In the seventh chapter, we present two artificial methods to artificially replicate the natural photonic structures:one is to use biological templates for replication, an-other is to fabricate amorphous photonic structures by using thermo-dynamically phase separation process. In the eighth chapter, we discuss the structure inspired by nature in the application of surface plasmon devices, such as broadband extraordinary optical transmission.
