| The object of this dissertation is, basically, to investigate the dramatic and theatrical structures of Gil Vicente's Farsa de Ines Pereira, which is also treated as a literary text reflecting the historical and social climate of its epoch.; The first part, divided in six chapters, deals with the following matters: (1) A comprehensive description of the dramaturgical methods observed in Gil Vicente's farces as a whole, and the place Ines Pereira occupies among them. (2) An analysis of the fundamental elements in the dramatic structure of the play: action and situation. (3) The technical device of perspective existing in a dramatic work of art, and its use in Ines Pereira. (4) The play considered as a literary text: the proverb-theme and its repercussion in the major structures of the text, and the apparent didacticism of the plot. (5) The minor structures of the discourse: stylistic exploitation of proverbs and verbal wits as basic components of that discourse. (6) Ines Pereira as a theatrical spectacle: an analysis of the systems of scenic signs representing the play's material aspect (scenery, clothing, accessories, gesture and kinesic effects, and vocal music).; The second part of the dissertation, consisting of four chapters, is primarily dedicated to an analysis of the characters--taking into account not only the main role of characters in drama, but also the essential importance of Ines Pereira's human figures, which is much greater than that of the plot. It is intended to present Ines Pereira's people as literary-dramatic types closely connected to their social environment and historical moment. The first three chapters refer respectively to the protagonist, to her two suitors, and to the minor figures. The fourth tries to capture the ultimate meaning of the play.; In general, this investigation proposes to demonstrate the structural regularity and formal design that makes Ines Pereira the greatest of Gil Vicente's technical achievements, without neglecting, on the other hand, the play's ironic underlying significance or "message". |
