Abstract/Summary:
United States Department of Agriculture standards for fresh market inspection of apples make it necessary to assess the quality of fruit by color, defects and shape. A machine vision system to inspect 'Golden Delicious' apples by color, shape, and some surface defects was studied. Procedures and algorithms to inspect 'Golden Delicious' apples for color, shape, and surface defects have been developed. The procedures developed were tested on 'Golden Delicious' apples and were able to classify correctly 100% of the time for color, 82.5% of the time for a surface defect, and 92.3% of the time for shape compared to a human inspector.
