Abstract/Summary:
Burnout, compassion fatigue, and depression were explored within the interpreting population using resilience and coping strategies as possible protective strategies. A sample of 450 interpreters that were members of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf participated in the study. Demographic factors, level of burnout, compassion fatigue, depression, resilience, and coping strategies were measured. Several statistical analyses were used and inverse relationship was found between burnout and resilience. Additionally, problem, avoidant, and emotion-focused coping had a significant correlation with burnout. Rates of compassion fatigue were also found to be slightly higher in individuals who self reported spending additional time in the deaf community outside of work. This study highlights the importance of personality traits such as resilience for the prevention of burnout.
