Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this mixed-method case study was to determine the effectiveness of the progressive discipline matrix in high schools in one Tennessee school district. The further intent was to investigate how discipline practices influenced the perceptions of teachers and administrators. Findings from quantitative data stated that progressive discipline matrix had a positive effect on discipline. Findings of qualitative data from 59 administrative and 48 teacher survey responses stated that teachers and administrators had a limited understanding of progressive discipline practices. Research based recommendations included creating systematic evaluations of school discipline policies and practices with assessments of understanding, revising training schedules in regard to progressive discipline practices and developing a system of communication of discipline policies that are effective.
