The Relationship between School Leaders and Teacher Retention

Abstract/Summary:
This study sought to determine if leadership practices and strategies had an impact on teacher retention. The researcher also investigated the linking between professional preparations and mentoring programs related to teacher attrition. The study was structured around three questions which included investigating leadership practices, professional preparation and mentor programs and school culture and the impact these have on teacher retention. This was done through interviews and a leadership questionnaire. The findings showed five areas of leadership practices that were significant which included the decision making process, understanding that teachers are unique and have unique needs, and recognizing work done well. The conclusion of this research involved mentoring induction programs as being an important aspect in retaining novice teachers.
