Abstract/Summary:
The purpose was to document and report the history of the School of Music at the University of Illinois from 1940-1970. The areas examined were the administration, the faculty, the educational program, and the physical facilities.;The following conclusions emerged: (1) The governance structure of the School of Music changed from and autocratic system to a system whereby many committees made recommendations to the director. (2) The John Kuypers administration (1947-1950) was the most progressive and controversial period during the years covered by this study. (3) The freedom granted to faculty members during the Duane Branigan administration (1950-1970) resulted in progressive program development. (4) The curriculum was expanded to include doctoral degree programs in music education, musicology, performance and literature. Degree offerings in composition and music history were added to the undergraduate program. (5) In 1948, the University of Illinois was one of the first universities in the United States to sponsor a large scale integrated contemporary arts festival. This festival was important to the visibility of the School of Music during this period. (6) The University music extension program, established in 1948, became the most comprehensive one of its kind in the nation. (7) The School of Music was widely recognized because of the excellence of its performing groups. (8) The School of Music library collection grew consistently during this period and was ranked among the nations best by musicologists and music librarians. (9) The facilities housing the School of Music were inadequate from 1947 until the completion of the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts in 1969 and the new music building in 1972. The importance of private contributions to the development of music facilities is documented.;Procedures included identifying and locating materials in the University archives and various administrative offices, and interviewing past and present administrators and faculty members of the College of Fine and Applied Arts and the School of Music.
