Abstract/Summary:
Strategic planning has been employed by the business community for decades. The church, until recent years, has avoided the use of strategic planning, at least in a formal sense, for a variety of reasons unique to each congregation. It is not the intent of this study to criticize what might be considered a casual approach to ministry. Rather it is an examination of the principles of strategic planning and applying those principles for creating a unified, directional vision for The Chapel in North Canton. It is intended to clearly establish the church's purpose and the strategy to meet the stated mission and ministry of the church. The scope of this dissertation begins with a critical analysis of the mission and ministry of The Chapel in North Canton during its existence prior to 2013. The study continues through the identification of leadership and leadership teams. It includes the initial development of a mission statement and core values. The bulk of the study addresses the creation of a strategic plan and the implementation of the plan. Attention is given to the biblical imperative for leaders as well as the character qualities of the same. Additionally, the study includes a process for ongoing review, refreshment, and evaluation. The resulting transformation into a unified purpose and direction of The Chapel in North Canton is still in the infant stage. However, the church as a whole has embraced the vision for ministry at The Chapel. The expectation continues to be a measurable impact in our community and world that is centered on the gospel. My desire is that this dissertation might serve as a template for other churches and ministries. I am certain that a well-conceived strategic plan intentionally implemented can have results of eternal significance.
