Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation is an examination and evaluation of the evangelistic preaching of George W. Truett with the preaching theory of Dong-Won Lee that can be utilized in evangelistic preaching today in postmodern South Korea using the methodology of Dong-Won Lee's preaching theory. The purpose of the dissertation is to answer the question, To what extent can Dong-Won Lee's theory regarding evangelistic preaching in postmodern South Korea be observed in George W. Truett's preaching? Fifty sermons of Truett from three stenographers' typed books are analyzed in comparison with Dong-Won Lee's theory of preaching. The first chapter introduces the research question with the problem and its setting. This chapter also provides the state of research including the preaching of Truett, the theory of Dong-Won Lee, evangelistic preaching in postmodern Korea, and the research design for the study.;The second chapter is an overview of Dong-Won Lee's approach to evangelistic preaching. It discusses the brief historical background within which Dong-Won Lee lived and ministered. Then the study provides his preaching and evangelistic preaching theory. The third chapter includes Truett's fifty sermons using Dong-Won Lee's homiletical theory. Because much biographical information about Truett has been written, this study focuses briefly on his life and evangelistic ministry to lost people in order to identify significant factors that influenced his preaching.;In the fourth chapter considerable implications of Truett's evangelistic preaching are given for a contemporary evangelistic preaching model in postmodern Korea. Truett believed in the theological importance of the authority of the Bible, which is based on the Lordship of Jesus Christ. He loved lost people and had a passion for evangelism. These implications continue to be significant for postmodern Korean churches.;Finally, the dissertation concludes with remarks that summarize the results of the research. Furthermore, the dissertation offers a few suggestions for possible further research.
