Abstract/Summary:
The goal of this project is to understand how incarcerated adolescent males experience friendship. This will be done through the application of a critical review of the literature and an analysis and integration of an intersectionality framework. Intersectionality is an analytic approach that seeks to understand multiple categories of identity (e.g., gender, race, socioeconomic status, disability, and sexuality) to recognize how one's different statuses converge to create a particular experience of a given phenomenon. The relevant literature regarding friendship, masculinity, and incarceration in adolescence is comprehensively reviewed. An intersectionality approach was then applied to propose a theoretical conceptualization of how the interactions of being male, adolescent, and incarcerated all converge to influence a particular kind of experience of peer friendship. The final section of this project will include an implications chapter in which future research directions are considered.
