Abstract/Summary:
This clinical dissertation focuses on the topic of promoting resilience in children with trauma through mental health and educational settings. Resilience has allowed children who have experienced trauma and who face adverse situations to lessen the negative effects and reduce the risk factors that result as a consequence. Resilience has been studied by researchers; however, this dissertation explores protective factors that aid in promoting resilience in children with an understanding that the adverse effects of trauma are subjective to each individual. I critically reviewed the literature on trauma and resilience to identify the protective and risk factors that aid in promoting resilience in children along with identifying the gaps and acknowledging areas for further research. Included in this dissertation are the responses from mental health professionals and educators in the field with direct clinical experience working with children who experience trauma. The information gathered from the literature review along with feedback from interviews with field consultants were incorporated into a brochure created to increase awareness, enhance knowledge, and inform treatment for mental health professionals and educators working with children.
