Abstract/Summary:
This is a historical study. Through literature reviews, examination of both published and unpublished materials, and interviews, this study examines the early history of one of the Catholic universities established jointly by Chinese educators and American Benedictine missionaries in China, the Catholic University of Peking. Specifically, this study describes and analyzes how both Chinese Catholic scholars and American Benedictine missionaries contributed to and promoted the preservation of Chinese culture and language, and the development of higher education through the University of Peking from 1927 to 1933.
