Abstract/Summary:
The fundamental concern of this work is the interaction of sentence negation with other elements in syntax. The study argues for a specific relationship between negation and the inflected verbs as part of a more general set of relationships affecting the ordering of the entire range of (+verbal) (;The study argues for Negation Phrase as a separate node based on evidence from negative quantifiers in Spanish embedded clauses. The ambiguity of preverbal negative quantifiers (e.g. ninguno 'no-one') is argued to result from the presence vs. absence of a NegP in the lower cause. These ambiguous negative sentences are contrasted with sentences with non-negative embedded quantifiers, providing independent evidence for the status and functioning of the NegP.
