Abstract/Summary:
The chemical investigation of the sea pen Scytalium splendens (order Pennatulacea, class Anthozoa, phylum Cnidaria) and a yellow sponge (phylum Porifera, further identification pending) collected off the coast of Taiwan was carried out, and the structures of the major secondary metabolites were established. S. splendens elaborates the sesquiterpene, (-)-1,10-epoxyaristolane (I) as its major secondary metabolite. The sponge's major metabolites were identified as 3-(13-methylhexadecoxy)-1,2(S)-propanediol (IIa) and 3-(15-methyloctadecoxy)-1,2-(S)-propanediol (IIb).
