Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation consisted of a critical review of existing literature regarding sibling caregiving of adults with neurodevelopmental disorders. Neurodevelopmental disorders are lifelong disorders that can require full-time caregiving from family members. Once parents die, the responsibility falls upon siblings. There has been a lack of research literature exploring the unique stressors and conceptualization of caregiving clients who are the disabled individual's sibling. It is important to understand the psychological, financial, medical, and social effects of caregiving, and apply that to clients who have taken on caregiving for their siblings. Using Rolland's model of chronic illness, the therapist can provide treatment that increases resilience while simultaneously decreasing negative coping skills. The author also incorporated a summary of clinical findings obtained from interviews with three field consultants who have worked with sibling caregivers in their practice, and a financial advisor who specializes in creating a road map for caregivers of people with neurodevelopmental disorders.
