Abstract/Summary:
There is considerable interest and demand in lithium-ion batteries for electric and hybrid vehicles, satellite, defense, and military applications besides the need in portable devices such as laptops, cell phones, watches, etc. Thermal runaway is one of the most critical safety issues in lithium ion battery technology; implementation of an internal temperature sensor network would serve as an early warning system and greatly improve the safety of batteries. This work characterizes a possible sensor material and assesses its viability through use of electrochemical testing (cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) and imaging (SEM). The material was found to show promise as a possible sensor component, but needs further improvements and investigation to become device ready.
