Synthesis and characterization of novel intercalation compounds of molybdenum trioxide and molybdenum disulfide

Abstract/Summary:
Conductive polyaniline has been intercalated into MoO{dollar}sb3{dollar}. This was accomplished by first inserting aniline into MoO{dollar}sb3{dollar} in the presence of a trace amount of H{dollar}sb2{dollar}O, forming (C{dollar}sb6{dollar}H{dollar}sb5{dollar}NH{dollar}sb3sp{lcub}+{rcub})sb{lcub}rm x{rcub}{dollar}MoO{dollar}sb3{dollar} (d-spacing: 20.1 A), which upon oxidation with (NH{dollar}sb4)sb2{dollar}S{dollar}sb2{dollar}O{dollar}sb8{dollar} yielded (PANI){dollar}sb{lcub}rm x{rcub}{dollar}MoO{dollar}sb3{dollar} (d-spacing: 13.7 A). The room temperature conductivity of (PANI){dollar}sb{lcub}rm x{rcub}{dollar}MoO{dollar}sb3{dollar} is 0.003 S/cm which is three orders of magnitude higher than its precursor phase. Thermopower data show that (PANI){dollar}sb{lcub}rm x{rcub}{dollar}MoO{dollar}sb3{dollar} is a p-metal, suggesting that the intercalated polymer is playing a more important role in the charge transport of the composite material.; Polyaniline, poly(ethylene-oxide), poly(propylene glycol), methyl cellulose, poly(ethylenimine poly(vinylpyrrolidinone), Nylon-6 and poly(ethylene) have been encapsulated into MoS{dollar}sb2{dollar}. This was achieved by addition of the polymer solutions to aqueous suspensions of single layers of MoS{dollar}sb2{dollar}. This causes flocculation during which the MoS{dollar}sb2{dollar} layers sandwich the polymer chains to give well-ordered single phase products. The d-spacings of these intercalation compounds range from 10.3 A in (polyethylene){dollar}sb{lcub}3.0{rcub}{dollar}MoS{dollar}sb2{dollar} to 21.1 A in (PVP){dollar}sb{lcub}0.76{rcub}{dollar}MoS{dollar}sb2{dollar}. The intercalation compounds were found to be conductive with the exception of (Nylon-6){dollar}sb{lcub}3.6{rcub}{dollar}MoS{dollar}sb2{dollar} and (polyethylene){dollar}sb{lcub}3.0{rcub}{dollar}MoS{dollar}sb2{dollar}. The conductivity of the other polymer-intercalated phases were in the range of 0.1-0.0004 S/cm. Four-probe electrical conductivity and thermopower measurements of pressed pellets of (PANI){dollar}sb{lcub}0.35{rcub}{dollar}MoS{dollar}sb2{dollar}, (PEI){dollar}sb{lcub}0.83{rcub}{dollar}MoS{dollar}sb2{dollar} and (PEO){dollar}sb{lcub}1.0{rcub}{dollar}MoS{dollar}sb2{dollar} show that the charge transport in these materials is p-metallic. Below 9 K, the conductivity and thermopower of (PANI){dollar}sb{lcub}0.35{rcub}{dollar}MoS{dollar}sb2{dollar} indicate a sudden transition to the insulating state. (PEO){dollar}sb{lcub}1.0{rcub}{dollar}MoS{dollar}sb2{dollar} and (PEI){dollar}sb{lcub}0.83{rcub}{dollar}MoS{dollar}sb2{dollar} also show a metal to insulator transition, at low temperatures. The metal to insulator transition in these polymer/MoS{dollar}sb2{dollar} nanocomposites is new, since it is not known for either the polymers or MoS{dollar}sb2{dollar}.; Molecular clusters of the general formula, Co{dollar}sb6{dollar}Q{dollar}sb8{dollar}(PR{dollar}sb3)sb6{dollar}, where Q = S, Se, Te and R = ethyl, n-butyl and phenyl have been intercalated into MoS{dollar}sb2{dollar}. This was accomplished by using the exfoliation and restacking property of MoS{dollar}sb2{dollar}. The new inclusion solids have well-defined interlayer spacings depending on the encapsulated cluster. For the Co{dollar}sb6{dollar}Q{dollar}sb8{dollar}(PPh{dollar}sb3)sb6{dollar} cluster, the interlayer spacing varies from 21.5 A in (Co{dollar}sb6{dollar}S{dollar}sb8{dollar}(PPh{dollar}sb3)sb3rbracksb{lcub}0.093{rcub}{dollar}MoS{dollar}sb2{dollar} to 10.9 A in (Co{dollar}sb6{dollar}S{dollar}sb8{dollar}) {dollar}sb{lcub}0.03{rcub}{dollar}MoS{dollar}sb2{dollar}. The surface area of (Co{dollar}sb6{dollar}Se{dollar}sb8{dollar}(PEt{dollar}sb3)sb{lcub}rm y{rcub}{dollar}) {dollar}sb{lcub}0.06{rcub}{dollar}MoS{dollar}sb2{dollar} was found to be 14.2 m{dollar}sp2{dollar}/g and upon removal of the residual phosphine ligands the surface area value increased to 22.1 m{dollar}sp2{dollar}/g...
