Abstract/Summary:
The development of a new measurement capability to reveal the spin dependence of atomic x-ray photoelectric transitions is reported. This technique combines x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and a low-energy diffuse-scattering electron spin detector to detect the spin polarization of the photoelectrons. This technique will be called spin-resolved x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (SRXPS).;After a description of the electron spin detector, the first SRXPS study of the deep core levels of ferromagnetic iron is reported. The Fe 2p;These findings indicate the importance of intra-atomic exchange in deep core-level photoemission from Fe. The electronic response of the metal to core-hole creation is found to be dependent on the spin of the core hole.
