Clones of individual genotypes from an escaped cultivar and a wild population of annual Phlox drummondii were grown in each of three nutrient environments to address several questions concerning the nature of phenotypic plasticity in plants and its role in plant evolution. Although there was a significant response to environmental treatment, there were no detectable differences in plasticity among genotypes or populations. The effect of the environment on levels and patterns of phenotypic and genetic covariation forms an underlying theme throughout this research. |
