Abstract/Summary:
here has been some effort directed towards understanding the effect of quantization of the acoustic phonon modes on the electron-phonon energy relaxation process. It has been generally assumed when one of the physical dimensions of the sample becomes smaller than the dominant phonon wavelength, the phonons are expected to be two dimensional with respect to electron-phonon relaxation rate. Theoretically the energy relaxation rate, ;Investigation of the energy relaxation of hot electrons in the free-standing film implied that the observed field dependence of the electron temperature was adequately described by a model using the three-dimensional phonon spectrum.;In an attempt to observe the effect due to phonon quantization, electron heating experiments were performed on nanometer-size wires at lower temperatures. The electron transport in the wires was found to crossover from a dissipative to a nondissipative regime. In the dissipationless transport regime, T...
