Abstract/Summary:
Does EDI provide competitive advantage to firms in the high-technology arena? How does it impact strategy development and tactics used in building an improved supply chain? This paper draws on the experiences of executives leading the migration to new technologies at some of the world's leading technology manufacturing, software, and supply chain service companies, breaking new ground in attempting to understand how EDI transfers competitive advantage to businesses that deploy it effectively. These businesses have used EDI and emerging transfer protocols such as XML to leverage existing core strengths and achieve sustained successful operating performance. Through the research effort, three key findings related to the adoption and use of EDI-related information transfer in technology firms and technology-intensive service industries are presented. The findings may be applied to a range of industries to guide enhanced decision-making, cross firm communications, and organizational responsiveness.
