Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to examine factors thought to be associated with the incidence of workplace aggression. In doing so, a model was developed that illustrates relationships between the incidence of workplace aggression and individual and situational variables and the interaction of individual-by-situational variables. Afterwards, multiple regression techniques were used to test the illustrated relationships in a sample of employees from a transportation company, a public school system, and a municipality. The results indicated that the three sets of variables explained more than 56% of the variance in the obtained scores for the incidence of workplace aggression. In addition, the results of a post hoc hierarchical regression analysis indicated that the set of individual variables explained a much larger percentage of the variance in the obtained scores for the incidence of workplace aggression than the set of situational variables explained. These results suggest that the interpretations of previous studies of workplace aggression, which have focused on situational variables, may have been incomplete.
