Core competencies required for executive college union directors at master's public comprehensive institutions with enrollments of 8,000 and above

Abstract/Summary:
This study was conducted in order to determine a set of core competencies, including skills and knowledge, required of Master's I public comprehensive college union directors In the future for purposes of career preparation, continuing education, and professional development. This study is a replication of research conducted by Morton in 1999 of Research and Doctoral I institutions.; The population of Union directors of Master's I public comprehensive institutions with enrollments of 8,000 and above (N = 111) were surveyed utilizing the Knowledge and Abilities Required of College Union Directors of the Future survey. The survey contained 86 items which directors rated according to their importance. The results were tabulated, measures of central tendency were determined, and core competencies were then ranked by importance.; The findings showed general consensus among college union directors regarding the core competencies necessary to be successful as union directors in the future Leadership and management characteristics were the highest rated categories in the study. The selected core competencies were not impacted by the variables measured, displaying no significant differences between responses from males and females, those reporting to student affairs and business/auxiliary affairs and commuter and residential schools. Responses from Master's I and Research and Doctoral I directors were also congruent.; Results from this study may be utilized to enhance preparation activities for those entering the field and can also serve as a foundation for continuing education and professional development programs.
