Abstract/Summary:
In the modern video codec design, interframe dependency is decorrelated by introducing the motion compensated coding, which is the major difference between image and video coding methods. The motion field plays an important role in the research of video compression, since its accuracy will affect the coding efficiency and since it carries abundant information to be utilized for video enhancement. In this work, two techniques related to the block-based motion field, especially for the H.263/H.263+ video-conferencing standard, are investigated. In the first part of the research, we proposed an efficient motion search for the overlapped block motion estimation (OBMC) motion field as well as an adaptive BMC/OBMC system, which can improve the accuracy of the motion field. In the second part of the research, an effective video post-processing by adopting motion-compensated frame interpolation is proposed, where the block-based motion field is used to reduce visual artifacts so that the overall video quality is enhanced.
