Abstract/Summary:
In 1988 the President of the American Library Association stressed the need to identify and train leaders throughout the library and information profession to prepare them for positions of leadership. Through an examination of Reference Group Theory, this study sought to determine if the concepts of group formation and cohesion explain the development of leaders in the library and information profession. The Bonnici Attributes Scheme for the Identification of [potential] Leaders (BASIL) was tested to see if current leaders share a common view of a set of core attributes they value that guide their identification of potential leaders. Four research methods: case study, phone interviews, content analysis, and a Delphi study were used to carry out the proposed research.
