Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation examines basic properties, requirements, and performance of multimedia watermarking. These include perceptual quality requirements, detection and decoding techniques and their performance analyses, construction of practical systems, and performance evaluations.; The ease of misappropriations of digital data has jeopardized the intellectual property right and the security of digital data. Multimedia watermarking has emerged as a powerful technique to protect the copyright and data security. It has also found new applications in conveying covert information, control signals, and user data in a seamless and standard compliant manner to achieve novel functionalities. In this dissertation, theoretical investigations for multimedia watermarking are presented, and applications and designs are constructed. Since perceptual quality in multimedia content delivery is of paramount importance, human perceptual models for visual systems and audio systems are exploited for applications in watermarking. In speech watermarking, a high-precision production model is utilized to achieve high fidelity. For optimum detection and decoding in typical multimedia contents, both additive and multiplicative models are studied. It has been found out that commonly used correlation detectors or decoders are far from optimum. Proper statistical frameworks for watermarking in various multimedia contents are constructed. New optimal detection schemes are devised, and performance analysis is developed. Theoretical results are validated by experiments, and performance evaluations are conducted to show the effectiveness of new methods. Methodologies in images and video are extended to other types of multimedia. A speech watermarking technique for delivering side information through severe transmission channels is constructed. A combined audio and video watermarking technique is also proposed.; The proposed multimedia watermarking techniques can be applied to copyright protection, content authentication, and side information delivery in commerce, journalism, security, and law.
