Abstract/Summary:
The focus of this researcher was to compare a large, urban school district's multicultural education model and philosophy with the practices that were actually implemented. The school district's model was examined in light of the James Banks' model compilation supported by various experts in the field.;To accomplish the purpose, the comparison was driven by five domains: policy, curriculum, teaching & learning, assessment, and intergroup relations. The comparison addresses three areas: (1) "School District Ideal"--philosophy of this school district's multicultural education program; (2) "Practices"--what practices were actually implemented in the school district; and (3) "Expert Ideal"--the James Banks' model compilation supported by various experts.;The results of this study supports the need for a comprehensive approach to multicultural education that ensures educational equity for all students in our nation's diverse society. It is concluded that a school district needs to address several areas: (a) involvement of all the key stakeholders in the development and implementation of its clearly defined, multicultural education policy and action plan; (b) training, support, and guidance of teachers in the implementation of that plan at all stages; (c) communication and participation with the total school community; and (d) making assessment a vital and integral part for effectiveness.
