Abstract/Summary:
Case studies that illustrate the characteristics of top performing charter high schools in one western US state have not been conducted. The purpose of this multisite case study was to examine the leadership, organizational structure, mission, curriculum, and community involvement of 2 of the highest ranked charter high schools in the state as published by the state's Department of Education. Social constructivism provided the framework for the study. The study's research question was centered on what qualities made these 2 of the top ranked charter high schools successful. Data were collected from 5 on-site interviews, 5 focus groups, and 4 observation periods. After transcribing and coding participant responses and field notes, data were analyzed through a polyvocal lens Study participants identified the importance of a rigorous program and a unified mission as the primary contributors to their school's success. Implications for positive social change include adding to the existing body of literature on successful K-12 public schools so that school and local government officials can inform current education standards, practices, and laws that regulate charter school design, implementation, and accountability measurement tools. With these identifying characteristics, more charter schools could be successful which would positively change the current education system.
