This study is an interpretive history of reading as portrayed in popular magazine articles in the United States from 1890 to 1990.;In The Struggle for the American Curriculum (1995), Herbert Kliebard described four interest groups that shaped the curriculum in American schools in the twentieth century: humanists, social meliorists, developmentalists, and scientific managers.;This study asserts that popular magazine articles reveal manifestations of Kliebard's interest groups: the intelligentsia, meliorism, developmentalism, and the sciencing of education, and that those interest groups have come to shape popular perceptions of reading in the United States.;Beyond generating a framework for the articles, the study also examines the way members of the four interest groups used magazines to promote their social agendas and shape popular perceptions of reading in the United States.;The study concludes with recommendations for enhancing the role of reading educators and professional organizations in providing information on reading issues in popular sources.
