| The Portrayal of Teachers in Children's Literature is a study that examines fictional portrayals of teachers in children's literature. The literature was written in the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's. The literature has been divided into three categories, as follows: primary grade level (PreK--third), intermediate grade level (fourth--sixth), and upper grade level (seventh--twelfth).;Patterns emerged from the examination of 140 books. Primary grade level teachers are portrayed as nice and attractive. Intermediate grade level teachers are not as clear cut. Some teachers are attractive while others are less than attractive and not very caring. In the upper grade level books, the majority of teachers are portrayed as uncaring and unattractive.;This study has resulted in an extensive annotated bibliography of teachers represented in children's books at all three grade levels. |
