Abstract/Summary:
In the studio a horn player must learn proper embouchure, posture, breathing, articulation, high and low ranges and tone quality among other things. These aspects of horn playing are usually taught in the studio and are vital to success. However, teaching the comprehension of music is an aspect of learning that is many times completely left out of a student's education. Through the use of Music Learning Theory, this method book is an attempt to give the instructor and student of horn an approach that encompasses both technique and musical comprehension. It is designed to progress in such a way that both areas are presented in a sequential manner side-by-side.; In designing the method, several areas of horn technique and musical comprehension are taken into consideration. In the area of technique, first pedagogical areas such as embouchure, breathing and posture as well as low range, various articulations, dynamics and tempo are addressed. In the area of musical comprehension and audiation, melody, harmony, rhythm, meter, tonality and transposition are addressed. Student activities such as composition and improvisation are used to facilitate musical comprehension.; The method consists of three parts: a student book, teacher's guide, and audio recording. The student book provides material that supports learning such as pedagogical information, words and tonal solfege of the songs in the method, fingering charts and the musical notation of the songs. Although the notation of the songs is included, the method is a sound-before-sight approach and is not used until the student has learned many songs by rote. The teacher's guide is a reference for the instructor that contains information and suggestions about how to carry out the teaching strategy. The compact disc includes all of the songs and tonal and rhythm patterns from each unit. Each song on the compact disc is sung with words, tonal solfege and played on the horn. Together the three parts of the method support student learning and instructor guidance in an effort to attain the goal of this method.
