After Hours: Five Encores for Flute and Piano is a 25-minute work for flute and piano comprising five movements of varying length. They are: "Waltz for Strayhorn"; "Tomcat"; "R.J. Meets E.D." for flute solo; "Bluebird"; "Cafe con Leche". Each encore is an independent work, but simultaneously flows together to create a larger more substantial piece or suite. Each of Schiffs encores is influenced by a different style of jazz with the individual encore title revealing the style.;This dissertation includes a brief biography of David Schiff; the history of how After Hours came to be; and an analysis of each encore, exploring five different jazz styles, together with performance and practice suggestions for the flutist.
