Abstract/Summary:
The correlation of Lewis, secretor and ABH phenotypes with H. pylori infection, chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers and gastric adenocarcinoma was investigated in black and white populations from New Orleans, mestizos from Cali, Colombia, and San Jose, Costa Rica, and whites from San Sebastian, Spain. Multiple but highly heterogeneous associations were found. No consistent patterns were identified that apply to all the populations investigated. Associations between blood group phenotypes and conditions considered premalignant did not always correspond to the associations observed between the blood groups and gastric carcinoma. Some of this heterogeneity may be due to the interaction of genetic and/or environmental factors not controlled in this study.
