Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to better understand predictors of repeat pregnancy among female adolescents. Adolescent pregnancy is an active social problem that creates significant social and economic expenses. Although a fair amount of research has examined teenage pregnancy, less work has focused on understanding and identifying predictors of repeat pregnancy during adolescence. Using the theoretical framework of social learning theory, secondary data were examined from 1,769 female adolescents. Multiple regression and chi-square analyses were used to examine the associations between age at first pregnancy, education level, socioeconomic status, type of contraceptive use, and having a repeat pregnancy. The findings of this study suggest that age at first pregnancy, education level, and socioeconomic status are predictors of female adolescents having a repeat pregnancy. The type of contraceptive use, however, was not found to be a significant factor in having a repeat pregnancy. The implications of these findings and recommendations for future research are offered.
