Abstract/Summary:
Research and technological advances often direct the reevaluation of current patient standards of care, and may necessitate the implementation of novel procedures to enhance patient care. In this project, the use of carbon dioxide insufflation and capnography monitoring were introduced into standard care for patients undergoing endoscopy procedures in a large Midwestern health care facility. Marion Good's middle range theory of pain management and Kurt Lewin's theory of planned changes were utilized to support and guide the implementation of these new approaches into clinical practice. The challenges encountered while successfully integrating carbon dioxide insufflation and capnography monitoring into the standard of care for endoscopy patients at this large health care facility are discussed. The incorporation of these best practice approaches is expected to enhance patient safety and comfort while undergoing endoscopy procedures.
