Abstract/Summary:
A switching power supply for use in spacecraft was designed, developed and manufactured. This design unitizes the forward converter topology. The fundamental issues of this design included feedback loop and housekeeping design, feedback loop simulation and multiple voltage output stages. A combination feedback signal and housekeeping power supply circuit was designed and implemented using a secondary switching circuit. This circuit was characterized and used to simulate the closed loop system response to complete the controller design. A previously utilized method, multiple windings on an output inductor, was extended to four outputs and also implemented. The multiple output inductor provided a power supply with better output voltage regulation than previous methods. The feedback signal circuit provided both and accurate feedback signal and an efficient housekeeping power source. The feedback signal/housekeeping power supply circuit may be used to reduce parts count and increase efficiency of the power converter. The coupled output inductor yields performance benefits, while significantly reducing costs and lowering parts count. The simulation methods developed allow for quick accurate simulation and design aids, with a minimum investment in modeling time and effort.
