Abstract/Summary:
The fundamentals of controlling the structural vibration of beams and plates treated with Passive Magnetic Composites (PMC) are studied. The effectiveness of PMC treatments in enhancing the damping of different base structures is demonstrated theoretically and experimentally. The emphasis in the PMC with beams and plates is motivated by their practical importance as essential structural members in many critical structures.; The equations governing the magneto-elastic characteristics of beams and plates treated with PMC are developed. Finite element models are then developed to describe the static and the dynamic characteristics of the different configurations of the PMC. The experimental performance of PMC is determined and compared with the theoretical predictions as obtained from the finite element models. The validity of the models is checked experimentally at various operating conditions. The obtained results suggest the potential of the new class of Passive Magnetic Composites (PMC) as an effective and simple means for controlling structural vibrations.
